Marion McMurdo
Professor McMurdo is a Graduate of Ninewells Hospital and MedicalSchool
in Dundee University, UK. Additional designations
include: MBChB MD FRCP (Edin, Glas, Lond) Cbiol FIBiol.
She was appointed to the newly created chair of Ageing &
Health in the University
of Dundee in 1997. She is
Honorary Consultant Physician in Medicine for the Elderly, in the Primary
Division of National Health Service, Tayside.
As Head of Ageing and Health at the University of Dundee,
Professor McMurdo leads a multi-professional research team which focuses on the
effects of physical activity, exercise and nutritional interventions in older
people. She lectures nationally and internationally and publishes widely in
this field. She heads the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching program on
the Medicine of Old Age to medical, dental and nursing students in Tayside
Her other responsibilities include:
- Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the National
Osteoporosis Society
- Founder Chair, Falls and Bone Health group of British
Geriatrics Society (BGS)
- Chair, British Geriatrics Society, Scotland
- External tutor, United Nations/WHO International Institute
for Ageing in Malta
- Director and co-founder of DD Developments Limited, a
University of Dundee company dedicated to promoting effective exercise for
older people
She received the Lady Illingworth Prize in 2001, an award
made to the UK
clinician considered to have made the greatest contribution to improving the quality
of life of older people through research. In 2005 she was identified by the
British Medical Association as one of 14 UK academic role models as part of
a national campaign to promote careers in academic medicine. She has published
over 100 peer reviewed articles
